Module: Imaging the Renally Impaired Patient: Nephrogenic Systemic Fibrosis

Module Description: Requirements for taking this course: You should be an MRI technologists to get the most out of this course. Patients with moderate-to-severe renal impairment present a unique challenge to radiologists and nephrologists. Recently, the development of nephrogenic systemic fibrosis (NSF) has been associated with contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance (MR) imaging using gadolinium (Gd) agents in patients with renal impairment. NSF is a potentially fatal, idiopathic skin condition characterized by thickening and hardening of the skin of the extremities which develops over a period of days to weeks. The exact causation of NSF is not completely understood, but emerging information continues to contribute to an improved understanding of the pathophysiology of this new clinical entity. Consultation between radiologists and nephrologists is an important component of the management of renally impaired patients that require imaging studies. The goal of this program is to enhance awareness of NSF and to provide insight into the management of NSF in renally impaired patients undergoing contrast-enhanced MR imaging studies.
