Case Study:
Colorectal Cancer
Case Study Description:
Audience: All healthcare professionals interested in learning about Colorectal Cancer.
Prerequisites: None
This case study presents information regarding colon cancer.
By reviewing the presented medical history, lab results, and test results of several diagnostic-imaging modalities, the learner will examine the characteristics of this pathology.
This learning exercise provides a review in case study format. Not only will you learn about the ultrasound findings associated with the pathology, but these findings will also be correlated with other imaging modalities, such as Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) and Computed Tomography (CT). This case study will illustrate the unique information that each imaging modality, clinical exam, or test provides to reach a diagnostic conclusion. In addition, the library section contains further information regarding pathology and a more in depth description of procedures, tumor types and material used for procedures discussed in this case study.
After review of this case study, as well as the discussion provided in the library, the learner will be able to:
* Identify the sonographic appearance of normal and abnormal bowel anatomy.
* Discuss the development of the large bowel.
* Describe the staging process for colon cancer.
* Name the categories in the T, N and M staging method.
* Recognize differentials for bowel masses.
* Examine treatment methods for colorectal cancer.
* Differentiate which arteries supply blood to the different areas of the large intestine.
* Evaluate the efficacy of the different imaging modalities used in identifying colorectal cancers.
