TITLE:Treating Tobacco Use and Addiction

SPEAKER: Dr. Charl Els, MBChB, FCPsych, MmedPsych, ABAM, MROCC
COURSE DESCRIPTION: The cigarette has been identified as the deadliest artifact in the history of human civilization. Most tobacco users know the power of addiction and want to quit. Tobacco is the leading preventable cause of death and disease globally and contributes to 6 of the 8 leading non-communicable diseases. Evidence tells a vivid story of the dire and urgent need to support cessation. This session offers a synthesis of the empirical evidence for safe and effective treatment for the condition of nicotine addiction or Tobacco Use Disorder, also referred to as Nicotine Dependence. Dental and medical professionals are ideally placed to screen, detect, assess and treat tobacco addiction; thereby saving lives and reducing the excess healthcare burden of tobacco.


PARTICIPANT OBJECTIVES:
By attending this course, participants will be able to:
* Understand tobacco addiction as a bona-fide chronic relapsing disease
* Appreciate the health effects of smoking as the leading preventable cause of death and disease
* Apply evidence-based counseling and pharmacotherapy strategies to helps patients quit smoking.


TITLE: Selecting Evidenced Based Research
SPEAKER: Dr. Robert Weyant, DMD, PhD
COURSE DESCRIPTION: This presentation will cover basic concepts in how (clinical) scientific evidence is created and disseminated. Emphasis will be placed on rapid access to high quality evidence for clinicians and assessing its value to clinical practice. Examples will be provided using evidence association with the oral systemic connections.


PARTICIPANT OBJECTIVES:
By attending this course, participants will be able to:
* Understand how and where high quality evidence is located online
* Employ efficient search strategies for accessing evidence
* Evaluate the relevance of clinical relevance to patient care
